They found it in a modified Peacemaker, designed and rebuilt by Dragoon Mountain Engineering of Tombstone, AX. Flown by the local militia (which doubles as a field-testing force for DME), it provided aft defense, improved bombsights, and a range increase courtesy of of the twin Pratt & Whitney P12s, which replaced the notoriously poor Guiberson diesel. There was some debate over whether to offer DME the contract, as DME is not supported by the Arixan government; however, with no other close competition, DME got the nod. Performance: The Peacemaker 740 ("370 x 2") shares the 370's speed and handling traits; however, range has increased 50%, bombing accuracy is improved, and attackers who previously had a free shot in the 370's rear arc now must face heavy machine-gun fire. The only downside of the 740 is that the 0.60-cal. Cheyennes have been down rated to 0.50-cal. Colt Comanches. 740s have been employed against pirate bands operating from Mexico, FCS, and even within Arixo (see below). Notable Actions: Arixo has made deals with the pirate bands that inhabit the badlands -- the pirates do not attack Arixo, and Arixo turns a blind eye to the pirates' activities. Few pirates are foolish enough to violate this deal; the few that have learn that Arixo may be small, but still packs a wallop. One pirate band who dared trifle with Arixo was a band of Sonoran renegades who used Arixo as a staging base for strikes against the Mexican state. After an attack across the border went badly wrong for the band, they decided to knock over a weakly-defended Arixo Air Defense Force supply dump near Benson, AX; the pirates made the hit and escaped with enough supplies to bring themselves back up to strength. Unfortunately, they made two critical blunders: First, they left three witnesses in the wreckage of the dump, and second, they camped within range of the local militia, the Cochise County Civilian Cavalry (C-4) -- which also served as DME's field-testing force. As soon as C-4 got word of the attack, the Peacemaker 740s fanned out, looking for the pirate camp. The camp was located in short order; the Cavalry regrouped, and loaded themselves for bear. C-4 struck just after dawn, with
all 16 of its Peacemaker 740s at the core of the battlegroup. The few pirates
who made it off the ground tried to use tactics suited to Peacemaker 370s;
the rear 0.50s were a nasty surprise. In the end, only two pirates lived
to surrender; they were summarily executed by C-4 personnel and their heads
(as well as the heads of their comrades) were sent to Phoenix, to serve
as a warning to other pirates thinking of backstabbing Arixo.
