V/S 201 "Kobold"
The second of the peculiar Vogt/Shauer
airplanes, the V/S 201 "Kobold" was a mid-size, all purpose fighter.
For some reason, this was the best seller of the three two-fuselage planes,
perhaps simply because the tail assembly is more normal in appearance.
It was also the least maintenance intensive.
The "Kobold" could fly
at a bit more than 250 mph, but like the other V/S planes was prone to
sluggish maneuvering, despite reinforced wings. It carried an ample 930
lbs of armor. Also like the other V/S models, the "Kobold's" cockpit
was rather small, though this allowed the pilot to withstand higher Gs
than usual. It also featured remarkable visibility.
As with the other planes form
Vogt/Shauer, the "Kobold" carried only superior, Sperry-Browning
weapons: two "Hurricane" .50-caliber cannons, two "Zephyr" .30-caliber
machine guns, and a "Crusader" .60-caliber cannon. It also had six hardpoints,
either for rockets or bombs.
While the "Kobold" sold
nearly twice as much as the other V/S planes, it still was not enough to
save Vogt/ Shauer Designs from going out of business. More of them saw
active duty than the other designs, but it is believed that most have been
shot down or scrapped for parts. The only intact ones are in the hands
of aircraft collectors.
