V/S 301 "Gnome"
The smallest and fastest of the
Vogt/ Shauer designs, the V/S 301 "Gnome" was actually notable for
its mediocrity. While clearly utilizing the Vogt designed two-fuselage
construction, it failed to otherwise be anything but a fairly typical small
fighter.
Approaching speeds of 300 mph
was not difficult for the "Gnome," but many fighters its size can
claim the same. Its 540 lbs of armor protection was good, but unremarkable,
and like its brother designs suffered from sluggish handling. While the
cockpit view was largely unobstructed, it was also cramped, again like
the other V/S models.
The "Gnome's" weapons
loadout was a bit noteworthy. All higher quality Sperry-Browning models,
it consisted of a "Crusader" .60-caliber cannon, a "Gatekeeper" .40-caliber
gun and a "Zephyr" .30-caliber machine gun. This is a bit more than comparable
planes carry, but the slow turning abilities of the "Gnome" end
up negating any real advantage, and really just served to jack up the price.
With nothing to really draw
a buyer, the "Gnome" ended up being the poorest seller of the three
V/S planes, even amongst collectors. Most were scuttled for parts, but
a few made their way into the hands of a group of pirates in Appalachia.
